My group and I went on a VERY long hike up a VERY steep mountain yesterday as our Friday trip. It was quite a lot of fun despite the very beginning which was almost straight up and we all thought we were going to die. Had a nice lunch, explored some caves, one of my kids almost died, devoured the bag of oreos I brought, and started on our way down. On the way back, we took a detour to briefly look at the lake, which was quite impressive.
Because we took this extra special trip to the lake, the way down was different, and near the end of the trail, we stopped because we found a 'cellar hole' and also pretty much the foundation of an old house, and what could have been wagon wheels. The following is pretty much verbatim the conversation that took place at the back of the group between myself, a CIT named John, my quiet co-counselor Maggie, and another co-counselor, Darren:
John: That was a pretty big foundation
Emily: Yeah, well, they had a lot of kids back in those days, they needed the room
Darren: I wish I lived way back then
Maggie: Do you want to have a lot of kids?
Darren (quietly): It would be a good chance to do a lot of something, if you know what I mean
Emily: Um, you could STILL do that (thinking of condoms, assorted birth control)
Darren: It's going to be pretty hard to find a girl who wants to have 20 kids
John: You could just become a Mormon and have a few wives
Darren: Yeah, I guess
John: But that would get expensive
Darren: Yeah
*This proceeded to get Maggie and I into a conversation about polyandry (which is waaaaaaaaaaaaay cooler except it's more chances to get pregnant), and then 'the names book' aka 'The Big Book of Baby Names' when we learned this is where Darren's parents got his name from. Because no one had ever heard of that name before.
I find myself loving my job more and more each day.
